Seven Years Ago I Released the Greenland Diaries: Days 1 – 100.

Well, like the very obvious title says above, on this day seven years ago I released my book the Greenland Diaries: Days 1 – 100 at Crypticon Minneapolis. I had zero confidence in this book and series. It started off as just a blog project I would put online to practice writing, specifically tense and perspective. Because I figured nobody would read it, since the Walking Dead was super popular and just released, I threw all sorts of crazy shit into it to make the story interesting to me.

After the blog got a fair amount of views, I decided to compulsively self-publish it in time for the convention. I didn’t even edit it coming off the blog. I literally copied and pasted it in without a second thought (the book has been edited many times since then). My initial strategy was that I didn’t care as much about this book. Beware the Ills was my jam. I had spent years working on it. The theme and character arc vibed with me tremendously. The Greenland Diaries was just another apocalyptic story, which seemed to have saturated the fiction market in my opinion. The only thing I promised to do with the story was make the monsters, the Unnamed, as unique as possible, and to basically make them the main characters of the story.

So anyways, with this in mind I released my book.

Well, I couldn’t have been more wrong.

Not only is it my most popular book, series, and writing by far, but it also sold out at Crypticon that year. It still sometimes sells out at conventions (before the apocalypse) much to the jealousy of my other books. I have turned the story into a series with four books in the main narrative, plus two short story collections from the same universe. There is even more in the pipeline.

It has gotten me a few fans, friends, and colleagues that wouldn’t have existed before with my writing. It has gotten me a few interviews, reviews, and more. I did not expect this whatsoever.

So as a little celebration for my book release seven years ago, today The Greenland Diaries: Days 1 – 100 is free today on Amazon’s Kindle. Enjoy this free book for all that it is. Feel free to leave a review on Amazon or Goodreads. Have a fantastic day and week. Stay healthy. Try to find what makes you happy. If you want to try writing a story, take the plunge, even if you don’t feel like you have any value with it. You never know who might enjoy it.
